For legacy email clients without OAUTH2 support

Gmail

Since May 2022, Gmail can no longer be used by third-party apps that don't support OAUTH2 with your main Google password. You must enable 2FA first, then create an App-Specific Password.

Enable IMAP & create an app password

  1. Log in to your Google account as usual.
  2. Turn on IMAP: mail.google.com › Settings › Forwarding and POP/IMAP
  3. Go to myaccount.google.com/security
  4. Open 2-Step Verification, choose a method (SMS, TOTP client, or hardware token) and enable it.
  5. Save or print your recovery/backup codes.
  6. Back on the security page, open App passwords and create one with email access (16 characters). Use this password in your email client.

iCloud / Apple Mail

Requires two-factor authentication on your Apple ID plus an app-specific password. Your regular Apple ID password will be rejected by third-party clients. iCloud Mail does not support POP — use IMAP only. Addresses ending in @icloud.com, @me.com, and @mac.com all use the same servers.

Create an app-specific password

  1. Sign in at appleid.apple.com.
  2. Go to Sign-In and Security and make sure two-factor authentication is on.
  3. Select App-Specific Passwords › Generate an app-specific password.
  4. Give it a label (e.g. "Thunderbird") and copy the generated password — Apple won't show it again.

Yahoo!

Yahoo requires an application password to access mail over POP/IMAP/SMTP. No OTP or 2FA is required. Generate one at login.yahoo.com/account/security.

Login is your full address (e.g. name@yahoo.com, name@ymail.com). Password is the application password, not your main Yahoo password.

Yandex Mail

  1. Enable IMAP access in your Yandex mail client settings (it can be reset without warning, so check it if mail stops syncing).
  2. Create an application password with IMAP, POP and SMTP access at id.yandex.ru › App passwords.
  3. Add the account using the application password. Login is your full address (e.g. name@yandex.ru).

GMX.com

You must enable 2FA using both a cell phone number and a TOTP authenticator, then create an application password. GMX enforces TLS 1.2, so it cannot be used on Symbian, Nokia N900/Maemo, Nokia N9/MeeGo, or S40 devices.

Microsoft began enforcing OAUTH2 authentication from September 16, 2024, and disabled application passwords. In practice, non-OAUTH2 email clients have been blocked from Microsoft email servers since June 2024. 

General note: nearly all of these providers now require an application-specific password (and usually 2FA) instead of your main account password for legacy IMAP/POP/SMTP clients.

  Для использования email цлиентов на старых устройствах надо использовать «пароли для приложений» (application password). На «нулевом» этапе включаем опция «пароль для приложений». К сожалению, в большинстве случаев придется включить двухфакторную аутентификацию (2FA, two factor authentication), без которой нельзя сгенерировать пароль для приложения. Это может быть номер телефона / СМС, TOTP клиент (Google Authenticator, Aegis, Microsoft Authenticator) или Email (для hotmail.com).
